Andrew Garfield joins Silence with Martin Scorsese

Andrew Garfield, best known as Spider-man, has joined Martin Scorsese’s project Silence. In it, Garfield will play Father Rodrigues, a 17th-century Portuguese Jesuit missionary who goes to Japan to investigate rumors that his mentor has abandoned his faith. During his journey, he must travel undercover to avoid religious persecution. The Last Samurai actor Ken Watanabe will star as Garfield’s interpreter. Japanese actor Issei Ogata is also on board. Scorsese was inspired to make the movie after reading Shusaku Endo’s 1966 novel Silence 25 years ago. It’s taken him that long to get the project off the ground. Jay Cocks, who worked with Scorsese on The Age of Innocence and Gangs of New York, penned the script in 1996. At one point, the movie was going to star Daniel Day-Lewis and Benicio del Toro but was never made. Now, Scorsese finally has the chance to explore Endo’s story of religious faith. Production is slated to begin in June 2014. ~Cassie Jasinski
