The Boston Society of Film Critics named the silent movie The Artist as the best picture of the year yesterday. Brad Pitt won best actor for Moneyball, in which he played Oakland A’s manager Billy Beane. Michelle Williams won best actress for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in My Week with Marilyn. In the supporting actor categories, Albert Brooks won for Drive, while Melissa McCarthy won for her hilarious performance in the comedy Bridesmaids. Martin Scorsese was named director for his critically-acclaimed movie Hugo. The screenwriting award went to Steven Zaillian, Aaron Sorkin and Stan Chervin for Moneyball. Project Nim, about a chimpanzee who is taken from his birth mother to be used in an experiment won best documentary, while the Canadian film Incendies was named best foreign language film. The awards are among the first to be given out in the lead up to the Academy Awards.
