Emma Watson putting school on hold for career

By Alexandra Heilbron on March 8, 2011 | 4 Comments

Harry Potter star Emma Watson, 20, who plays brainy Hermione Granger in the movie franchise, announced on her website yesterday that she’s postponing her studies at Brown university to focus on her career. She wrote: “As you know, I love Brown and I love studying pretty much more than anything but recently I’ve had so much to juggle that being a student AND fulfilling my other commitments has become a little impossible. I’ve decided to take a bit of time off to completely finish my work on Harry Potter (the last one comes out this summer) and to focus on my other professional and acting projects. I will still be working towards my degree… it’s just going to take me a semester or two longer than I thought :)” In addition to acting, Watson has designed a clothing line with ethical clothing chain People Tree, which has just released her Spring/Summer designs. She has a range of other fashion projects lined up, including a collaboration with Alberta Ferretti. Emma’s newest acting project, Summit Entertainment’s The Perks Of Being A Wallflower, will not require her to take time from school, as it’s shooting this summer. Emma will play the first love of a 15-year-old outsider (Logan Lerman).

I applaud her for wanting to continue with her education. It is clearly something she wouldn’t ever need (having made her money from the Harry Potter Films) but obviously something she enjoys.

She got her priorities straight, very rare to see that from a movie star. She is one focused woman at her age. I really hope she continues to study her passionate courses in the future.

This one, it seems, will not fall the way of the Lohans or the Hiltons or Spears of the world. Way to go.

I lover her, I really do, despite how my comment might sound. And I admire the fact that she has a good head on her shoulders.

But isn’t she a little bit overrated? I like that she commits herself to worthy projects like People Tree and stuff and school of course…but as a supposed ‘fashion icon’…is she? Also, she’s not really *that* good of an actress. She can do with a bit more coaching. I feel like she’s more of a brand or a ‘face’ (as she’s obviously gorgeous) than a talent.
