When extraordinarily successful investment banker James King (Will Ferrell) is arrested on false charges of fraud and embezzlement, he is sentenced to 10 years in a maximum security prison. He’s given 30 days to prepare for his new life in jail. Fearing for his life, he enlists the help of Darnell (Kevin Hart), a man James assumes to be an ex-convict based purely on the fact he’s black. Desperate for money, the law-abiding Darnell agrees to take James’s cash so he can buy a new house for his family. He’ll teach James how to Get Hard. Darnell creates an elaborate training program for James and works to prepare him for the hard life of prison.
