In spite of his then decades-long plus superstardom, Will Smith had yet to truly star in a superhero film. However, that all changed with Peter Berg's 2007 superhero action-drama/black comedy Hancock. Taking on an entirely original character, Will Smith makes Hancock his own as a down-on-his-luck super-powered being in need of an image rehab. Working alongside Jason Bateman's Ray, the two form an unlikely friendship, with the goal of Hancock being a more publicly accepted hero. Although the film is a hodgepodge of tone shifts and two different story halves, Smith's performance as the titular Hancock is great, as he provides a well-rounded approach to his character as heavily flawed, but one who ends up earnestly seeking redemption and answers to his origins.
