First person with a disability to win

World War II vet Harold Russell, who lost both of his hands during a wartime explosion, became the first individual with a disability to receive an Oscar. He was victorious in the Best Supporting Actor category in 1947 for his turn in the seven-time Oscar-winning war drama The Best Years of Our Lives. Interestingly enough, Harold also became the first actor to win two trophies for the same role — he was also presented with an honorary Oscar for "bringing hope and courage to his fellow veterans" via his performance.
