The Jungle Book vs Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle

Time difference: 2 years apart.

Here is an interesting case—although the films were released two years apart, they were both announced in the same year. These live-action adaptations of The Jungle Book came at the tail end of Hollywood’s obsession to adapt classic fairy tales into live-action films. Disney’s version was helmed by Jon Favreau and was a more direct remake of their animated classic, while Warner Bros. would tap Andy Serkis to helm Mowgli. Both featured an A-list cast to fill out their roles, but Disney got the jump on Warner Bros. Earning just shy of $1 billion dollars at the box office, The Jungle Book received rave critical reviews and an Oscar for Best Visual Effects, while Warner Bros. essentially lost faith in their adaptation, selling the distribution rights to Netflix.
