Stephen Fry backs dolphin hunt ban

Stephen Fry wants to stop the dolphin hunt in Japan and is urging his fans to join him. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug star posted on his Twitter account: “Help stop the horror behind the killing of dolphins in Taiji. Check out the shocking footage. Sign the petition.” The footage Fry is referring to was provided by the Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) and is meant to alert people about the brutality of the dolphin hunt and convince them to sign the petition. WDC wants to convince  Japan Airlines and Air China to refuse to transport live, wild dolphins, which are taken from their natural habitat. The annual dolphin hunt takes place off the coast of Taiji, Japan, from September to April.

During that time, Japanese fishermen kill thousands of dolphins and whales by driving them into a cove, trapping them, and spearing them in the head. Other dolphins are captured and sold to aquariums around the world where they spend the rest of their lives in captivity. The hunt, which was also the subject matter of the documentary The Cove (2009), has been a target for animal rights activists in the past. Stephen Fry isn’t the only celebrity concerned about whales and dolphins – Hayden Panettiere has also protested against the slaughter of whales. ~Cassie Jasinski
