What can we expect from the Deadpool sequel?

We’re about six months away from the release of the currently untitled Deadpool sequel and not much is certain about what the movie will entail. However, after taking a look at some of the posters, teaser trailers and comments from the cast, here’s what we’ve put together as possibilities for the Merc with a Mouth’s return.

First, we know for sure that the sequel is our introduction to Cable, who will be played by Josh Brolin — Brolin has signed a four-picture deal. For those unfamiliar with Cable, also known as Nathan Summers, he is the child of X-Men and mutants Scott Summers (Cyclops) and Madelyne Pryor (who is the clone of Jean Grey). Being the child of mutants gave him telepathic, telekinetic and time travel abilities, which vary in degree depending on the story.

Cable’s appearance in the sequel was confirmed in the post-credits scene that ran during Deadpool. In the teaser No Good Deed, which ran before Logan, the words “Nathan Summers cumming soon” are written on the phone booth that Wade (Ryan Reynolds) uses to change into the Deadpool costume. The misspelling is definitely meant to be the kind of adult humor that is synonymous with Deadpool, but also reaffirms that Cable will be a big feature in the film.

The first major hint for the storyline also comes from that teaser. As Deadpool leaves the phone booth, the word “Hope” is spray-painted on one of the buildings behind him. It’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, but it could be a pretty big clue.

This is reinforced by the lastest poster, tweeted by Reynolds, that shows a version of The Creation of Adam with Deadpool and Cable, with the words “The Second Coming” written at the bottom.

This could be a hint to the movie’s title, but it could also be an indication of the storyline. In the comics, X-Men: The Second Coming is the ending of a crossover storyline that involves Cable saving the first mutant born after most of the world’s mutants lost their powers. Cable uses time travel to bring the new mutant into the future to keep her safe. He names her Hope and raises her like a daughter, and eventually brings her back to the past when she’s older.

A third hint to Hope’s appearance is that both of the promo photos show Cable with a teddy bear attached to his belt. Hope might not be the main story, but it definitely seems like she will at least be a pivotal part of the introduction to Cable.

Most of the trailers so far for the Deadpool sequel seem to be setting the stage for the upcoming X-Force movie. In the second teaser we see Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) and several other mutants. In the 10 seconds of film footage — played between Deadpool parodying Bob Ross — it seems like an effort is being made to save mutants from some kind of facility, possibly similar to the one where Wade gained his powers.

We also see Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), Dopinder (Karan Soni), Weasel (T.J. Miller), Blind Al (Leslie Uggams) and Colossus (voiced by Stefan Kapicic) in the dinner table portrait at the end, and newcomer mutant Domino (Zazie Beetz) is shown for the first time. Domino is a mutant who has the power to change her environment to sway the odds in her favor.

A video posted for Halloween 2015, which was a teaser for the first film, shows Deadpool questioning children dressed as X-Men to recruit them, which might have been an early hint of the intention to gather the mutants.

At the start of Deadpool 2’s production Reynolds also tweeted a photo of himself in the suit laying in front of the Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, which is where he recruited Negasonic and Colossus in the first one, and where mutants training to be X-Men live.

While there is nothing really confirmed at this point aside from character appearances, there’s no doubt that the Deadpool sequel will focus heavily on mutants. We also know that Deadpool, and by extension X-Force, The New Mutants and the current X-Men series exist in the same cinematic universe. Hopefully as we get closer to the June 1, 2018 release date we’ll know a little bit more of what to expect and how everything ties together. Leave us a comment telling us what you want to see from the Deadpool sequel. ~Hayley Michaud
