Roger Ebert predicts True Grit will win Oscar

Famed movie critic Roger Ebert has made his “early guesses” as to who will win at the Academy Awards this year and he’s made some surprising choices. He predicts True Grit will win Best Picture, despite The Social Network having won the Golden Globe in the same category (True Grit wasn’t nominated). He wrote in his column: “True Grit is gaining momentum at the box office, and I have a sixth sense it will win the Oscar.” Ebert predicts True Grit‘s Hailee Steinfeld, 14, will win in the Best Supporting Actress category, saying, “She actually has the leading role in the film, but stands a much better chance of a supporting Oscar. The Academy has a record in this category of choosing newcomers, especially plucky young women.” For Best Actor and Actress, he believes those will go to the Golden Globe winners, Natalie Portman for Black Swan and Colin Firth for The King’s Speech, but for Best Supporting Actor, he goes with Geoffrey Rush (The King’s Speech), rather than favorite Christian Bale (The Fighter). The nominees for the 81st Golden Globe Awards were announced today. In the film categories, Barbie led with nine nominations, Oppenheimer was next with eight.
That’s awesome! I love Roger Ebert and I hope he’s right. True Grit was great, the girl was amazing and Ebert is back!!! Did anyone see his new show?
I can’t remember if Inception is one of the included 4 Best Picture but I think it will win, if it is! I’m not looking all over the Web 4 the info. No I havn’t seen his new show. I bet its good.
Roger Ebert still has it. True Grit was incredible.
While True Grit might upset The Social Network for Best Picture, there is NO way that Geoffrey Rush will beat out Christian Bale in the Best Supporting Actor category. Rush has an Oscar (well deserved) and while he was great in The King’s Speech – Bale went to another level in his performance in The Fighter. Bale deserves to win, and for once, The Academy will get it right…
I heard Spike Lee was shouting his mouth off again about the Oscars being racist, but that girl above, Hailee, is part African American and part Asian. She was awesome btw and I hope she wins.

True Grit or the Social Network should get the oscar and it would be fine by me either way, they are both standouts this year among all other movies and all nominees are deserving of at least the nomination. I agree with Trevor that Christian Bale should win the Oscar, if you have ever seen the Machinist, you’ll know at what length he goes to create a character. He invest himself so much in his roles, this kind of dedication should be rewarded.
Best Director should go to Nolan or Fincher and best writing to Sorkin for Social Network. I don’t really care who wins in the other categories. I think Portman is a landslide for best actress though.
True grit should get the oscar
As long as Natalie Portman wins for best actress i’m all good. She was AMAZING in Black Swan.
@germain: unfortunately, christopher nolan wasn’t nominated as best director for inception (one the biggest oscar snubs)
I have been a avid movie watcher for some time . It is my humble oppinon that the True Grit redoux . Is one of making a fine classic John Wayne flim and putting the Cohan touch of darkness of retribution that was missing in the original .Taking the charactors and expanding them to a gritter edge of truth . With a touch of class .
the original True Grit was better then the remake, the social network was boring and loaded with mistakes how could a movie that is supposed to be based on facts win when it was so inaccurate, the fighter was the best movie by far.
I think The King’s Speech will take best movie, Firth best actor, Rush best supporting, Portman actress (although wouldn’t be bit surprised if Benning got it)
I hope to see True Grit/Black Swan/The Fighter this week, anxious to check them out…King’s Speech/The Kids Are All Right were terrific movies with terrific performances…loved Mark Ruffalo’s performance
am curious to see Blue Valentine, am a big fan of Gosling and wondering if he was “missed” on list…
I have to agree with Dave re the Social Network, was not impressed with it, nor its win at the Golden Globes…
True Grit was very good, but doesn’t deserve best picture.
Probably because it was the most mediocre, myopic male option.
@ Carter. Thanks for pointing this out, i was sure he was nominated but I was wrong but he would be deserving for sure.
@ Dave. Social Network was a good movie regardless of it’s validity or lack there of. How many movies you see that state that they are based on facts, Operative word here is BASED but are actually far from being accurate, casing point, Unstoppable, still a great movie. Social Network was good because of the magnitude of the events unfolding around those kids and the fact that the main character treated the people who helped him out with such disrespect. It’s very compelling but you might have liked Twilight better.
