Leonardo DiCaprio shocked by support

Leonardo DiCaprioLeonardo DiCaprio found the support he received ahead of the Oscars ”quite shocking.”

The 41-year-old actor finally picked up the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in The Revenant and was ”overwhelmed with gratitude” at being recognized on his sixth nomination, and also astonished by the number of people who had campaigned for him to triumph when nominations were announced.

Speaking backstage at the glitzy ceremony, he said: ”We always strive for the best in what we do, but this year in particular, I’ve been overwhelmed with, you know, such support, really, truly, by so many fans and so many people in the industry. It’s quite shocking, actually, and what can you say? I’m really grateful. I really am.”

Leonardo used his acceptance speech to make a call to action on climate change, and was pleased he had the platform to do so.

He said: ”This whole thing has been an amazing experience. For me to be able to talk about the film but also to talk about something that I’ve been obsessed about. That’s climate change. To me this is the most existential crisis our civilization has ever known and I wanted to speak out about that.”

In his speech, Leonardo spoke about the importance of ”working collectively together” to stop the ”most urgent threat facing our entire species.”

He said: ”I just want to say this. Making ‘The Revenant’ was about man’s relationship to the natural world. A world that we collectively felt in 2015 as the hottest year in recorded history. Our production needed to move to the southern tip of this planet just to be able to find snow.

”Climate change is real, it is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating. We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters, but who speak for all of humanity, for the indigenous people of the world, for the billions and billions of underprivileged people out there who would be most affected by this.

”For our children’s children, and for those people out there whose voices have been drowned out by the politics of greed. I thank you all for this amazing award tonight. Let us not take this planet for granted. I do not take tonight for granted.”

I keep hearing people say “ya, and this is from a guy who took 6 private jets in the past week.” I see this comment on Twitter or FB. Um, how fast can you run or ride a bicycle? He’s contractually obligated to go all over the world to promote his movie and go to these awards. Can’t get from London to LA in a day without a plane. But far as I recall, he’s got a really eco-friendly home in Palm Springs and other places. He does TRY. And drives an electric car. He is doing his part. There’s obviously more he and everyone else can do to help combat climate change, and there always will be more we can do but we GOTTA START doing it is all he means.

The worst part about people who are whining about how “he could do more” or “he took a jet to go somewhere” is that they are usually the ones who don’t do a thing about anything…but they are so quick to jump on social media and demand these celebs do more. They just expect the celebrities to be the ones to save the world, and so they don’t do anything beyond complain about them. I have saw people complain that Angelina Jolie doesn’t so enough as a UN ambassador and how shes not that great even though she runs a charity and dontates money to other charities and she is willing to help out countries in need and save children from their bad lives by adopting….this is basically the same thing. Here Leo is trying to bring awareness to how everyone needs to participate in saving the world from climate changes and instead of people everywhere taking even a small step to help, they have to throw in their uneducated opinions enough how “he’s not doing enough…he takes a jet…” etc. Well, if he didn’t take a jet to different places then none of you so called “fans” would even get to see him, so it’s your fault he is taking jets to begin with. Oh well, until the end of time there will always be ungrateful, uneducated jerks who feel the need to nitpick everything about the only people in the world that are genuinely trying to make a difference, and usually it’s because the jerks are too busy looking for the next thing to complain about instead of getting off their @$$es and making a difference. Anyway I’m so glad he finally won, he really deserves this. I have loved Leonardo DiCaprio since back in his growing pain days. 🙂
