Disney+ launches new channel Star, doubling content library

Disney launched a new channel for adult audiences today on their new Disney+ platform, titled Star. The channel will double the content library on Disney+, with over 150 TV series and more than 500 movies at launch from Disney’s creative studios, including Disney Television Studios, FX, 20th Century Studios, 20th Television, Touchstone Pictures, Searchlight Pictures and more.

In addition, Disney+ will become the exclusive home of Star Originals. Titles streaming at launch include the Love, Simon spin-off series Love, Victor, written by the film’s original writers, Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger. Star will also premiere the adult animated sitcom Solar Opposites, created by Rick & Morty co-creator Justin Roiland and writer Mike McMahan.

Greg Mason, Vice President of Marketing of Walt Disney Studios Canada spoke with me about the exciting new launch of Star. “We knew we had a terrific library of content already and it was a matter of trying to understand in each market what people are looking for. We did a lot of research in Canada to say, ‘Is it palatable for parents and is it okay to include that within the Disney+ app?’ We found that it was incredibly well-received.”

What was most important to Disney was having the best parental controls in the industry. They have ensured that parents can set the rating for their own child. Mason added: “Every child is different and every parent has a different opinion. If you’re a parent, you can set the rating that you deem suitable for your child, and that child will only see the content that you want them to see.”

Given the exciting array of classics like Homeland, 24 and Family Guy, we asked Mason what he will be rewatching at launch. He said: “Personally, I think the one I have to rewatch is 24. I think because that was done in real time with our Canadian Kiefer [Sutherland] and to be able to see that right after another and to see the continuity will be something special.”

A Star Original that he’s really excited to see later this year is the series Only Murders in the Building, starring Hamilton native Martin Short, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez. Other anticipated titles include Dopesick, starring Will Chase, Rosario Dawson, Jake Dorman and Michael Keaton and The Dropout, starring Kate McKinnon.

Nomadland, which won the Toronto International Film Festival’s People’s Choice Audience Award, is a Searchlight Pictures title coming to Star on Disney+ on April 9.

You can subscribe to Disney+ for a new price, at $11.99 per month, or $119 annually. Current prices for existing subscribers (those who became members prior to February 23) will be honored for six months.
