Rob Stewart honored at Canadian Screen Awards

The Canadian Screen Awards were held last night and broadcast live on CBC from the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto. As the host, comedian Howie Mandel was funny and inventive, and kept the show entertaining.

The most poignant portion of the evening was when George Stroumboulopoulos came on stage to give a tribute to Sharkwater filmmaker Rob Stewart. He announced that starting in 2018, the award for Best Science or Nature Documentary Program or Series will be in Rob Stewart’s name and will — in addition — include a gift of $25,000 each year for the next five years.

Other special awards included the Earle Grey Award, which went to Tantoo Cardinal, and the Lifetime Achievement Award, given to Christopher Plummer, 87, who entertained the audience with a very funny speech.

The night’s top winners were It’s Only the End of the World with six wins followed by Race with four wins. Tatiana Maslany took home two trophies for her lead performances in television (Orphan Black) and film (The Other Half).

It seemed the nominees were told they had limited time from the moment their names were announced to get to the stage and give their speech, so several of the winners (including Tatiana) sprinted the route onto the stage, proving Canadians are a fit bunch. ~Alexandra Heilbron

   Too bad I’ve never heard of almost all the shows or the people listed above.Never see them listed on Canadian tv out west and if they are they’re read-up in the tv guide is very boring so don’t watch.
   But at least Schitts Creek, Murdoch Mysteries and Just for Laugh I’ve heard of and watch 2 out of 3. Because of this I never watch the Canadian awards show. Just nothing of interest for me

   I watch almost only Canadian shows because I think the quality is much better compared to American TV, which is usually just trash. Flashpoint, Murdoch, Heartland, Orphan Black, The Listener – all high quality shows. But for some reason, they don’t tend to nominate any show if it’s popular. I’m amazed they let Murdoch win a few things – Heartland is kept out of the running because it’s a “family show” and therefore couldn’t possibly be good, could it? (That’s sarcasm.) But what the hell was that fan’s choice award about? That had to be rigged. Obviously only that girl’s friends voted. And I don’t watch Canadian movies. Unless they’re demented, boring or starring people who are related to the director, producer or casting director and therefore can’t act, the Canadian government won’t fund them so that’s pretty much all that gets produced. The film industry here is still sadly laughable.

   Hey Samantha…. Try Googling the Fan’s choice winner. 55 Million views on her show, 2 million trackable votes for her, 100,000 followers on social media… and her second year being nominated for the award! Lol.
