Katherine Heigl adopting Korean baby

By Alexandra Heilbron on September 11, 2009 | 15 Comments

Katherine HeiglKatherine Heigl and husband Josh Kelley are adopting a special-needs baby from Korea. “It is a little girl and she’ll be 10 months at the end this month,” Heigl said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show today. “She was actually born the day before me in November, which I thought was really serendipitous and just kind of like a sign. I realized just recently that I basically forfeited my birthday for the rest of my life.” Heigl, who also has a sister adopted from Korea, is naming the baby girl Naleigh. “Well, I am naming her after my mother and sister Nancy, Leigh. So we call her Naleigh.” Heigl, who is currently on leave from the TV series Grey’s Anatomy to focus on her movie career, says her daughter will be coming “real soon,” and joked, “I wanted to tell everybody so you don’t think I stole a Korean baby.”

I think that raising a special needs child takes a very special person . The focus needs to be on the child and her needs. I’m sorry but as a teacher of over 33 years I have seen too many marriages dissolve when the going gets tough between parents of special needs children. Because of the nature of both of their careers I don’t think they have a chance to make it!
Sorry, i admire both of theese young people, but they don’t know what they are getting into.

I think they have an excellent chance to “make it” BECAUSE of the nature of both their careers…they can afford to pay someone else to get them through any rough times, LOL (but true).

totally agree, rita, and hopefully it will not materialize into a disaster down the road…

Where in the article did it say the child was a “special needs” child anyways ?

The first line of the article

this is a good thing they are doing, i just really hope they are doing it for the RIGHT reasons (rather than just for some public attention/sympathy). i understand that raising a child with special needs can be hard, but i dont understand how it can destroy a marriage? if you love the person you had (or adopted) the child with, and you love the child…how can that all of a sudden tear an entire family apart? nancy, i agree with you, i dont think it will be long before katherine and her husband realize how hard this is going to be and hire someone else to raise the baby.

It’s the “in” thing to do in hollywood, they are just raising the bar a bit. Sad but true. And if it’s not the special needs child who breaks them up, it’ll be hollywood, they are probably done for in a few years anyway.

Personally I don’t believe they have just jumped into this decision.I think they have researched this child’s special needs and are totally prepared to fill them.I give them credit for taking on this responsibility that others wouldn’t even consider.Kudos to them for not seeking perfection as other couple’s do in Hollywood!!!!

i sure hope youre right about them researching the child first gypsy!

Now supposedly, Elton John and his hubby want to adopt a Ukrainian child. Like Carol says, it seems to be the “in” thing…and with all the media exposure it brings, I’d say they are getting all the attention they are looking for.

thats what i was kind of thinking this was all about. attention and sympathy. because katherine isnt really that popular yet, no one really pays any attention to her.

I agree, just a fad with all this adopting of foreign babies. I’d imagine there are plenty of special needs babies and children in the US or Canada waiting to be adopted. And saying she wanted to tell everyone so nobody would think she stole a Korean baby just highlights the fact that it might just all be about what other people were going to think. Sounds like a publicity manoever to me.

I still believe Helgi is not going into this adoption blind ,as the article does state she has a adopted sister from Korea. That in itself tells me she is more aware of the cultural difference, that comes from adopting a Foreign child. That is my opinion in part, of what separates her from the other celeb’s!!!

I forgot to add that the laws for adoption in Canada, are much more restricting than those of a foreign country. As for the U.S I don’t know what their criteria is for adoption.

and really, just because your birthdays are a day apart, that is not a sign…lol, that is coincidence.
