Poet, novelist and human rights activist Maya Angelou died at the age of 86 in North Carolina. Her literary agent, Helen Brann, confirmed the news earlier today. No cause of death has been announced but Angelou had grown frail and recently spent some time in the hospital. One of her best-known books is “I Know Why the Caged Sings,” based on her childhood. Made into a 1979 TV movie, it told the story of young Maya, who was raped at the age of seven by her mother’s boyfriend, and after she testified against him, he was killed by an angry mob. Feeling that her voice had killed him, she stopped speaking for years. Ms. Angelou also worked as an actress – her most recent appearance was in the 2006 feature film Madea’s Family Reunion.

Many heartfelt messages have been posted by fans and admirers on Twitter. Angelou inspired thousands and was a personal mentor for many, including Oprah Winfrey. She will be greatly missed. ~Dylan Paisley
