Meryl Streep attacks Trump women for #MeToo silence

By Tribute on January 4, 2018 | 34 Comments

Meryl StreepAward-winning actress Meryl Streep has called out President Trump‘s wife Melania Trump, and his daughter Ivanka, for their silence during the Harvey Weinstein sexual assault scandal that has swept the entertainment world and dominated news headlines.

In a recent interview with the New York TimesThe Post actress was responding to the backlash she faced about her own silence after the news broke about Harvey Weinstein being accused of sexual harassment and rape, at which point she shifted the spotlight to Melania and Ivanka Trump.

She replied, “I don’t want to hear about the silence of me. I want to hear about the silence of Melania Trump. I want to hear from her. She has so much that’s valuable to say. And so does Ivanka. I want her to speak now.”

Ivanka and Melania are, of course, the daughter and wife of a man who heads up the most powerful country in the world and who also has been the subject of allegations of sexual harassment by numerous women. So Meryl is not wrong in saying their opinions would hold some serious weight.

It’s worth noting Melania did respond after her husband was caught on tape before an interview with Access Hollywood talking about objectifying and sexually harassing women. She called her husband’s words just “boy talk.” So we’re not sure what she could possibly have to say about Weinstein’s actions.

It’s also interesting to remember that Streep and Donald Trump had a brief feud after she knocked the President’s tasteless imitation of a disabled reporter during her 2017 Golden Globe Awards acceptance speech. Trump fired back via his Twitter account, calling Meryl a “Hillary-flunky” and “one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood.”

While both Melania and Ivanka have yet to speak out about the take-down of sexual predators in the entertainment biz and beyond, Meryl spoke out about Weinstein just four days after the New York Times article was published on Oct. 5, 2017, saying his behavior was “inexcusable” and that she “didn’t know” about it. But for some, her words didn’t come soon enough. Let’s see what her current stance incites this time around.

Melania and Ivanka Trump have yet to respond to Meryl’s request for them to speak up. ~Alexa Caruso

First why use the word “attacks” that wasn’t an attack.
Second, deflecting what? Deflecting that people are ridiculous and gave her a hard time for not speaking up in the first 4 days after the Weinstein despicable behaviour came out? Come on now.

  6. Tharsos • January 4, 2018 @ 10:57 AM

So She knows as a Fact that Melania and Ivanka have some kind of #MeToo experience? or anything to say on the subject?. Just remember folks, a year and a half ago, Meryl Streep gave a standing ovation to Roman Polanski… an accused Sex Offender. Let that sit with you for a bit.

    Piss on her

  8. Rhonda • January 4, 2018 @ 11:05 AM

I agree with all of you. Time to retire Meryl!

  9. Gelinda • January 4, 2018 @ 11:12 AM

She ruined the Golden Globes for me. I turned it off. Can’t we have entertainment without serious politics?!

  10. Mary Auld • January 4, 2018 @ 11:19 AM

What a hypocrite Streep is. SHE is trying to deflect attention from herself for HER silence on something she had to have known was going on onto the Trump family….still has not gotten over the fact that Trump was voted in President. Used to be a HUGE fan of hers but will never go so another movie with this hypocrite in it. WHY does she think Melania or Ivanka have more valuable voices than anyone else?? THEY were not in the movie industry…THEY were not the women who kept silent and allowed this abuse to go on for years….SHE was the generation of women who kept silent so Merryl….SHUT UP!! We all know what you are.

  11. terry • January 4, 2018 @ 11:34 AM

Tell Meryl to keep her comments to her self. Just act and keep out of politics. We do not care what you think of Trump.

  12. CDubya • January 4, 2018 @ 11:36 AM

Maybe she deflected because she’s said enough about it and wanted to hear from the Prez’s wife and daughter. FYI sometimes people choose their words wisely. It took her 4 days to say something about Harvey but was she even obligated to speak? Just cause she’s a woman in Hollywood? Because other actresses look up to her maybe? Well the country looks to the first family and not a peep from them, so Meryl has spoken and signed petitions etc… she’s just saying it’s their turn for the spotlight.

From the woman who stood up and gave a pedophile a standing ovation at the Academy Awards. Meryl, you can’t pick and choose which abuser you like and don’t like. An abuser is an abuser even if you like their work!! I’m done listening to anything she says.

  14. shawn murphy • January 4, 2018 @ 12:17 PM

This is the same woman that critized hard working blue collar Americans who watch football and boxing, sorry we do not live a life of entitlement like you Queen Meryl

  15. Stephen • January 4, 2018 @ 12:25 PM

This discussion has nothing to do with Streep even if she did weigh in and make herself a target. The real issue is why and how we managed to vote into our country’s highest office a truly despicable man. I am not a fan of Hillary Clinton but no one not even her could have brought shame on our country like Trump has and continues to do every day. He is a dangerous demagogue and leads the growing fascist movement taking place in America. As long as half of America is getting what they call news from Facebook and Fox News we are doomed to continue our slide toward being irrelevant internationally, and working against our own long term economic and political interests. Wake up Republicans and admit you made an awful mistake!

‘the Trump women have spoken clearly with their silence — What can they say that doesn’t further diminish themselves as they “stand by their man” in spite of his admitted misconduct/possible criminal actions?

  17. Matt Denison • January 4, 2018 @ 12:32 PM

All you people bashing Meryl Streep. Get a life. Were you all there on every set of every film that she made or every red carpet event she did etc??? You know 100 percent she knew the truth and did nothing or said nothing just to save her career. Show me the proof. Same with those who think entertainers don’t have the right to an opinion. They pay taxes just like anyone else and have just as much a right to speak out on issues they feel strongly about. You will likely never hear anyone from Trump’s family speak out. Why would they when their own father has sexual assault accusations against him that I believe are still active in the courts. Don’t watch her movies if you don’t like her stance. As for the standing ovation for Polanski I don’t condone what he did at all but I chose to think the ovation was for his body of work as a film maker which I am willing to separate from his personal character. His own accuser has even moved on and if I remember correctly said something to the effect of wanting to get on with life and see the whole thing laid to rest.

She should keep her rotten mouth shut.

  19. Tori • January 4, 2018 @ 3:00 PM

I think the problem is that people need to realize that they were not there and those who were made decisions, choices that they have to live with. The other problem is clarity. If you publicly oppose sexual predators then you should be clear on your message and not choose which offender to back and which to crucify. If you are a public figure, then your opinion can be relevant, but be clear on your message. As for the first family; they are public figures, however, in this situation they do not have the ability to speak about this matter except for opinion. They do not have any factual evidence to provide and in politics you need to know when to speak and when it is not your place to speak.

  20. Nancy sacks • January 4, 2018 @ 5:15 PM

I wish actors would keep their opinions to themselves. There opinions wield a lot of power over people who can’t think for themselves….think for yourselves people…actors are in the movies…they need to stay there!!

  21. Nancy sacks • January 4, 2018 @ 5:16 PM

    Oops…their opinions….

  22. Carlie O • January 4, 2018 @ 5:28 PM

Has alway thought she was an overrated, poor actress who’s portrayals were as irritating as fingernails scraping on a blackboard. Overrated and now a despicable being who is deserately trying to shift the focus from her own complicity in not only tolerating the predatory behavior of Weinstein but even praising it.

  23. Carlie O • January 4, 2018 @ 5:34 PM

Denison’s logic is a solid as a wet diaper bag. Of course she knew about Weinstein’s predatory behavior, she even joked about it. One of the problem’s is that we give weight to anything actors say at all, they are actors, they mouth the words of writers and follow the directions given to them are primped and packaged….they are no more than automators. It is only an idiot who would think that we should give any weight to what they say. And if you think that anything they say should rise to a level of being quoted, YOU are the idiot. Maybe we should listen to the political analysis of world affairs from hockey players.

  24. Debbie Schmidt • January 4, 2018 @ 6:00 PM

Matt Denison – Very well put and I agree with you 100%. Everyone commenting on here…….you are stating an opinion which is your right. Meryl has one and she has stated it and it’s okay if you don’t agree with her, but she definitely has a right to have one. Whether Trump’s wife and daughter choose to keep their opinions to themselves is also their right to do so and nobody should really ask them to state them if they choose not to. They are the president’s wife and daughter and from a political stand point, I can understand why they would stay quiet. I’m glad victims are speaking out and I hope this is the beginning of the turning point so that people in the future will feel they can speak freely about being a victim and people will be held accountable. The guilty have been getting away with it for too long and I applaud those brave enough to have stepped up. Right now it’s mostly actors and media people, but those are the ones who will hopefully give the rest of the “every day people” the courage to do the same. Just my opinion and very happy that I’m not only allowed to have one, but to freely state it and share it.

Ahhh Meryl can blow it out her overstuffed derriere.

  29. Arlene • January 4, 2018 @ 7:58 PM

Why is Meryl Streep trying to get the Trump women involved in this when she had direct contact with this pig. Don’t tell me she didn’t know anything about HW.

  30. Gemma • January 4, 2018 @ 10:23 PM

I wonder why she didn’t say something 25 years ago as i am sure she knew, big hypocrite, who does she think she is to call upon these 2 ladies, they are not Hollywood Trash and are wise to stay away from them. Everyone knows how all these stars got where they are and they all said nothing until they got very very rich to start blaming these men. Half are probably not true and some not in the news anymore and hopping on the band wagon for some new publicity. Meryl Streep should know now America does not care what Hollywood has to say, didn’t work during the election, they were all behind the Fraudulent Clinton organization and thought they had it made. Big Surprise. The Trump Family should ignore these trashy people.

  31. TeeDee • January 5, 2018 @ 11:03 AM

I believe Meryl when she says she didn’t know that Weinstein was a sexual predator. If he never approached her for sexual favors, then it’s more than possible that she never knew. But once the allegations started pouring out, she started speaking out, which isn’t something that can be said for many other actors and actresses in Hollywood. Let’s stop being so quick to judge how another person reacts to this news and instead make sure that we’re doing all we can to put an end to the culture of sexual harassment toward women and children in this world.

  32. CDubya • January 5, 2018 @ 12:29 PM

People said she kept quiet to keep her working?!?!? OMG Do the math, she was a working and accomplished actress long before Harvey and his brother created Miramax and got into the business pf producing movies. Hell, she won her first Oscar in 1979 then again in 1982 (which in itself would solidify her career for decades as a multiple Academy award winner early on! BUT yes, if she did know about this stuff with Harvey (and others in the industry) years ago, then shame on her for not speaking up. This could have been made public and steps could have been taken to clean up the entertainment industry many years ago. I guess it had to start sometime though. Sadly she’s one of the women who might have known but didn’t do anything at the time. I don’t think she had much to fear though. She was well established.

  33. Jim • January 5, 2018 @ 8:57 PM

Emmm did not this woman Honor and give a STANDING OVATION to the PEDOPHOLE Roman Polanski??? I guess that is OK he only raped a teen-ager I guess that doesn’t count in Streep’s book or was she promised a role in one of his productions. Now that she is wealthy she doesn’t have to cater to these perverts and is coming out screaming for others to join her. I hope the First Lady and Ivanka (2 Sophisticated Women) ignore this Hollywood trash and not join in their outdated accusations.
