Woman in Gold is about Maria Altman (Helen Mirren), who lost everything during the Holocaust, including her possessions, her family and her history. One part of her history is a very famous painting of her aunt, by Gustav Klimt, titled “Woman in Gold.” Since the end of WWII the painting has been called the Austrian version of the Mona Lisa and a cultural landmark for the country. Along with her lawyer, E. Randol Schoenberg (Ryan Reynolds), she sets out to sue the Austrian government for the painting, not for the money, but for one of the last remaining tokens of her family’s history. During the legal battle, the film flashes back to young Maria (Tatiana Maslany) and her daring escape from persecution in 1940’s Austria.
