James Franco, 32, is the odds-on favorite to win a Best Actor Academy Award for his performance as a mountain climber who meets with an accident in 127 Hours, at 9-to-2, according to oddsmaker Bodog.com. With 3-1 odds is The Social Network‘s Jesse Eisenberg. Colin Firth is listed at 6-5 for his role as King George VI in The King’s Speech, which is a 2-1 fave for Best Picture. Inception, which was a huge hit at the box office, has 6-1 odds for Best Picture. Also believed to be in the race for Best Picture are the western re-make True Grit and the ballet drama Black Swan. Scarlett Johansson is standing by Woody Allen in spite of sexual abuse allegations from his daughter Dylan, who says the abuse happened when she was seven.
Not surprised, 127 Hours has gotten a lot of buzz. So is James Franco your pick? Who else is in the running?
Can’t wait to see True Grit!
No offence Helen, but it says in the article that Jesse Eisenberg and Colin Firth are also front runners. Do you mean who are the other two? Your guess is a good as mine!
Im sayin Christopher Nolan should be up for best director, and it looks like Danny Boyle might be nominated again. and from the looks of True Grit the Coen bros r prolly gonna be nominated again which im pumped for…
@johnny – I should have said: who else do you think should be in the running!
Franco is a good young actor. He seems to be able to hold his own, especially in his war movies. Flyboys for WWI and The Great Raid for WWII. Even Annapolis was good. But he seems to really do well in bio pics. A gay lover in Milk was surprisingly good, or James Dean and now here he is playing a living survivalist. He’s lucking in this role because the person he’s portraying is still alive. The person can give him tips on how he felt at the time and add realism that Franco just needs to convey. I think there is a future role out there for James so I’m unsure the Academy will let this happen so early in his career.
As for Inception for Best Pic, it was really well filmed and original, but like Avatar proved, the lower budget movie house films will likely win. Or the historical ones like the Kings Speech.
Having seen 127 Hours & King’s Speech @ TIFF, BOTH deserve to win, though Franco has an edge because of other great performances this year (Howl, Eat Pray Love)
Good news. 🙂 They are all good actors,of course. 8)
