Susan Sarandon calls pope a Nazi

By Alexandra Heilbron on October 18, 2011 | 16 Comments

During an interview at the Hamptons International Film Festival on Saturday with actor Bob Balaban, Susan Sarandon said she’d sent a copy of the book Dead Man Walking to the pope, but clarified that she was talking about the late pope, John Paul II, “Not this Nazi one we have now.” When Balaban expressed shock at her remark, she repeated it. Bill Donohue, the president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, told E!News Sarandon’s remarks were “despicable,” adding, “it is very hard to find someone dumber than [Sarandon].” Donohue said he won’t bother to ask for an apology from the “hard-core leftist” actress because “she is ignorant and full of hatred to the Catholic Church.” He went on to explain to TMZ that like all German boys during that era, Pope Benedict XVI, then known as Joseph Ratzinger, was conscripted into the Nazi Youth against his will, but refused to go to compulsory meetings and deserted at the first opportunity. REMEMBER Always best to get ALL the facts straight before formulating an opinion, especially where religion and politics are concerned. Believe it or not there were alot of Germans that went to War against their better beliefs and will. Out of Fear they were forced to be on the “Hitler side” or be killed. When put in that kind of position it doesn’t leave you much of a choice. As human beings most of us would do whatever it takes to stay alive. So I would have to say Sarandon’s comment was very insensitive, better she had her facts straight and remembered most people of that calibre (The pope) I would hope have good intentions towards mankind.

The Vatican had knowledge of the Mohawk Child murders here in Canada and are soon to be charged with crimes against humanity, along with the Queen of England. Though her opinion is expressed in bad taste i think she is right. These Native children were tortured by the Church or over 100 years and buried under 15 feet of soil when they closed the doors in 1970.

Religion is one of the most corrupt and distorted things in human history, and people need to realize that its only purpose is for power and greed. Occupy Walstreet? There should be an Occupy Vatican so humanity can get its soul back from those who claim to be working for “God”.

Although I agree with Joshua to a point. There is alot of “Corruption in Religion.(AS some would say religion has turned into a business of money making) It is not Religion itself that is corrupt, (as I believe the bible is a moral code of sorts, A guideline as to lead by example and simply be a decent human being with morals and values) but rather some of the people that stand for or teach religion, to include bishops, ministers, priests etc. Also the interpretations(by people) of various religions are taken rather literally and fanatically by certain groups. This is unfortunate because I still firmly BELIEVE there are honourable and decent people still taking a stand for religion and its teachings, that are honestly trying to do a greater good for society. It’s just the “Bad Apples” that have spoiled it for others and Religion itself. I think you have to dissect each person as an individual and not judge a “Group of people and their intentions as a whole.

Facts. Get them from all angles before judging. Everyone is supposed to have their freedom of expression, but if you say things there might be a price. Sue her for slander.

He’s right. She is ignorant. She’s always shooting off her mouth in an offensive way.

the problem with actors and thier opinions is they surround themselves with yes-men and have no one in thier circles to challenge thier rather narrow views of the universe. Add to that thier huge self-affirming and gratuitous paychecks and you have monster egos who think thier opinions are of a higher calibre than anyone else.

I kinda feel sorry for people like her.

Susan Sarandon is one of my most favourite actors. She can play any role extremely well.
I admire her for speaking her mind. If that’s how she feels about the Pope she’s entitled to say so. Too many people keep silent for fear of offending others. I think she’s right in her opinion of him…..not because she’s Susan Sarandon but because “I” think so.
