Still from Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard. After releasing on Wednesday, Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard emerged victorious at the box office with an opening weekend gross of $11.7 million. Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, and Salma Hayek all returned to star in the sequel to 2017’s The Hitman’s Bodyguard, which had a pre-pandemic opening of $21.38 million. The newest film came in short, however it is not unexpected given the midweek opening that spread its grosses over five days. The film’s five-day start, including earlier previews, came in at $17 million domestic.

After a surprising return to first place last weekend, A Quiet Place Part II settled in second place for its fourth weekend in circulation. The film, which stars Emily Blunt, crossed the $100 million domestic threshold last week, making it the first film to do so since the pandemic began. This weekend, John Krasinski’s immensely popular sequel continued its box office stay to gross another $9.4 million, bringing the thriller to a total of $125.2 million since it was released.

Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway had an edge in its second weekend, earning third place for a second time. The animated sequel, which stars Rose ByrneDomhnall Gleeson and James Corden, came in at $6.1 million. Down from a $10.1 million opening weekend, the family film has now grossed $20 million in total.

Warner Bros. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It earned fourth place in its third weekend with a narrow win over Disney’s Cruella. Starring Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, the third Conjuring movie held steady from last weekend, adding another $5.1 million. That pushes the film’s total domestic gross to roughly $53.6 million over three weeks.

Edging out Warner Bros. In the Heights, Disney’s Cruella rounded out the top five with a weekend gross of $4.9 million. The film has now earned a total of $64.5 million in four weeks. ~Cassandra Coleman
