Son of God DVD review

By Alexandra Heilbron on June 3, 2014 | 24 Comments

Son of God is a beautiful retelling of the story of Jesus Christ, which features gorgeous cinematography. It opens with the Jewish people living under despotic Roman rule, being forced to pay taxes to Caesar. The Romans make quick work of any dissenters and kill even innocent children.

Into this chaos walks Jesus, whose peaceful ways are a stark contrast. As he travels from village to village, Jesus attracts not only devoted disciples, but when he arrives in each place, there are delighted cries of “Jesus!” Children run to greet him and he returns their smiles. Crowds gather to hear him speak and preach the gospel. He performs astounding miracles, such as healing a cripple simply by laying his hands on him and telling him, “Your sins are forgiven, my son.” A man who was dead for four days is brought back to life. Jesus stops men from stoning a woman by picking up a rock and telling them he’ll give his stone to the first man who can say he has never sinned. Abashed, they walk away quietly and Jesus gently tells the woman, “Go, and sin no more.”

Although his actions bring him many followers, he also attracts many critics and skeptics who dislike the power Jesus has with the people. They object to him healing on the Sabbath and the fact that he forgives sin, claiming that only God can forgive sin. When asked how he can do this, he responds, “The Son of Man has authority to forgive sin.” In their eyes, he is saying he is God, and they consider that blasphemy — punishable by death.

Diogo Morgado plays Jesus as a being who shines from within. He is patient, kind, and brimming with goodness. He cares about people and wants to help sinners find their way to the Lord. Jesus is portrayed as someone with enormous warmth and charisma. It’s easy to see how his quiet beneficence could have attracted so many followers.

The story is told very accurately according to the Bible, and gives an insight into the Son of God and why his legacy lives on so strongly today. Special extras include a behind-the-scenes look at the movie in Son of God: Reborn, which includes interviews with producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, who reveal that when they were making the miniseries The Bible, the story of Jesus shone through and it became obvious that it would make a beautiful feature film. There are also interviews with Diogo Morgado and several other cast members. From the Set: The Passion shows the recreation of the crucifixion. In Faith Into Practice: Introduce Children to a Relationship with Jesus Christ, Mark and Roma talk about the Compassion program, which has helped 1.5 million children escape from poverty and live lives free of having to work in factories or as child prostitutes. Instead, they attend school, eat regular meals and have play time. Finally, the theatrical trailer is included. Click here to watch our interview with Roma Downey and Mark Burnett. We have several copies to give away – please tell us in the comments below by Sunday, June 8 at 9 p.m. why you would like to win a copy. But seriously, it was a very moving series that helped me to understand without feeling I was forced into religion. I would love a copy so that I can share it with the rest of my family.

Baptized as a Catholic and growing up in a Catholic school this movie is a good reminder of that because after changing schools and living away from home haven’t gone to Church and been exposed to other religions as well.

However I’d like to win this DVD to be able to revisit the story of Christ and like a refresher course of where it all began and bring me closer and back to the roots. I still pray and believe in God but just need a little reminder of the story of Jesus Christ. Been a little lost and this seems like a great opportunity.

Excellent review. There weren’t enough critics saying good things about this movie. I’m glad it still successfully found its audience. If there is one issue with this review, it’s the phrase “healing a cripple” in the 2nd paragraph. That should be re-worded.

I would like to win a copy of this film. It would make for an excellent movie night with my mom and I’m sure my nana would enjoy watching this as well.

Thank you for your consideration and have a wonderful afternoon.

I think this would be an interesting movie to watch. I may know the story of Jesus already, but it is still interesting to see another version of it.

  18. wayne glare • June 5, 2014 @ 11:29 PM

I think having this DVD would be a great opportunity to share the gospel with all, believers and especially people who do not know the truth the way and the life Jesus Christ.

  19. Maurice Caldarella • June 6, 2014 @ 11:32 AM

not seen the movie yet would love to watch it

  20. Lori • June 6, 2014 @ 12:54 PM

This movie brought me back to Jesus after a 25 year separation. I had finally come back to God a year earlier, but could not find Jesus, though I had been looking for Him and praying. Finally, on April 4th, I saw a picture from the movie, and saw Jesus, not the actor. It was like being hit by the Wailing Wall, and I spent the next two weeks crying and repenting of the last quarter century of ignorance and misdeeds. Today my faith is stronger than it has ever been in my life, and it has changed my life in so many wonderful ways that I can’t even begin to describe it. I would love a copy of this movie to remind me of how much He loves me, and how He saved me. 🙂

  21. Aili • June 6, 2014 @ 1:21 PM

It was a very inspiring movie. Loved it!

  22. Lisa • June 6, 2014 @ 8:37 PM

This movie was literally life changing. I grew up in a Christian household but I never really lived and breathed my faith like other people. Until now. I was talking about this movie for days after watching and I still am! This movie rejuvenated my faith and showed me the unconditional love that Jesus gave. If I get a copy, I can’t wait to show this movie to so many others so they can also experience what I did while watching it. Diogo did such an amazing job with this role and this movie definitely showed me a different perspective. I will forever be grateful for this movie.

  23. Karen Leary • June 7, 2014 @ 11:35 PM

It was a beautiful movie, I rented it and watched it twice in the time it was available to me. I was very moved, to tears. This movie needed to be made, and to be shared, and to be discussed. There will always be controversy, but that will lead to discussion and consideration of “the truth”. Thank you to Roma and Mark for bringing this piece of historical non-fiction into our lives.

  24. Vicki Brown • June 10, 2014 @ 12:08 AM

I haven’t seen the film yet, but as a Christian, I would hope that when I saw it( maybe I may even win a copy) I would find it to be one of integrity and of interest to everyone.
